The 1855 classification of Bordeaux wine is a historic and influential ranking that was created for the Exposition Universelle de Paris. It aimed to showcase the finest wines from the Bordeaux region of France. The classification divided the wines into five classes, or "growths," based on their reputation and market value at that time. The top tier, known as the "First Growths," included legendary châteaux like Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Haut-Brion, and Mouton Rothschild (added in 1973). The ranking was primarily based on the prices these wines commanded in the market, with the assumption that higher prices reflected superior quality. Though the classification was originally intended for Bordeaux's internal use, it quickly gained global recognition and remains a reference point for wine collectors and enthusiasts, shaping the perception and value of Bordeaux wines ever since.

Arguably, the art of distillation was founded in ancient Mesopotamia (the modern day equivalent is an area covering parts of Iraq and Syria), often used as a way to produce perfumes and aromatics.

100 AD

Here we find the first written record of distilling. Ancient Greek philosopher Alexander of Aphrodisias describes the process of taking sea water and distilling it into pure drinking water. Medieval civilizations evolved their techniques over the following centuries, although still not resulting in alcohol.

500-1000 AD

Knowledge of distillation spread to Europe along with the traveling Moors of the early first millennia. The process is picked up by those in the Christian religion, using it to produce ingredients for various ceremonies, and also medicines for colic, palsy and smallpox.

1000-2000 AD

The origin of whiskey began over 1000 years ago when distillation made the migration from mainland Europe into Scotland and Ireland via traveling monks. The Scottish and Irish monasteries, lacking the vineyards and grapes of the continent, turn to fermenting grain mash, resulting in the first distillations of modern whisky. 78 Whiskey of the United States
